Driving Under the Influence is a criminal offense that affects people of every demographic: male and female, young and old, rich and poor. A conviction for DUI can carry serious and potentially life-changing implications and consequences. Because there is no opposing lobby, the legislature continues to increase the severity of the punishments for DUI, which can include jail time, probation, hefty fines and costs, suspension of one’s driver’s license for months or longer, alcohol counseling, a criminal conviction, or all of these.
DUI is an incredibly complex area of law, even more complex than many felony charges. Many DUI cases raise issues related to search and seizure under the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution, and under Article 1, Section 12 of the Florida Constitution. DUI cases also usually contain complex scientific issues related to determining a person’s blood alcohol content, or determining how an accident occurred.
With so much at stake, no one charged with DUI should go to court without an attorney, and no one should ever enter a plea of guilty or no contest before they have even had a chance to consult with an attorney or even see the evidence against them.
Geoffrey R. Cox has been representing clients in DUI cases for nearly twenty years. He has been lead attorney in more than 80 jury trials and has been Board certified by the Florida Bar in the area of criminal trial practice. Board certification is The Florida Bar’s highest level of evaluation of the competency and experience and recognizes an attorney’s special knowledge, skills and proficiency in various areas of law and professionalism and ethics in practice. Only 7% of eligible Florida Bar members are board certified, and only Board Certified Florida Bar members are allowed to identify themselves as a “Board Certified Specialist,” or to use the letters “B.C.S.” on business cards or letterhead, in legal directories or in advertising.
